In today’s fast-paced media landscape, being interviewed can be both an exciting and daunting experience. Whether it’s a live TV segment, a podcast, or a print interview, knowing how to handle the spotlight can significantly impact how your message is received. Here are some essential media training tips that will help you prepare and perform at your best, leaving a lasting impression on both your audience and the reporter.

  1. Preparation is Everything

Before you step in front of the camera or microphone, take time to prepare. Know your audience and tailor your message to them. Think about the key points you want to communicate and rank them in order of importance. In most cases, 2 to 3 main talking points will suffice, so keep it focused. Try to craft responses that last about 7-10 seconds—just enough time to get your message across without losing the audience’s attention.

Don’t shy away from elaborating on your answers; “yes” or “no” responses won’t get you far in an interview. If you’re asked a question, always offer a detailed, conversational answer. Avoid industry jargon or acronyms, and use clear, simple language. Relatable examples can help your audience connect with what you’re saying. And don’t forget to mention where they can go to learn more, whether it’s your website or social media channels.

  1. Appearance Matters

For TV interviews, your appearance can play a big role in how your message is perceived. Stick to solid colors and slim lines—these tend to look best on camera. Avoid stripes, checks, or busy patterns, as they can be distracting. If you’re a professional with a standard uniform, like a doctor, wearing your lab coat can further add to your credibility. Keep your hair and makeup simple; there’s no need to overdo it. If you wear jewelry, make sure it’s minimal and not something you’re likely to fidget with during the interview.

If you’re on a video call, make sure you’re well-lit and positioned at eye level with the camera. Avoid cluttered or noisy backgrounds, as they can distract from what you’re saying. And most importantly, silence your phone!

  1. Master Your Gestures

Body language can speak volumes. While it’s important to be expressive, you’ll want to avoid excessive movement like large gestures or swaying. Keep your hands relaxed in your lap or gently bent at your elbows. If you’re standing, don’t lock your knees—this can make you look stiff and uncomfortable, and worse, you might even pass out! Sit or stand up straight and avoid crossing your arms or using other positions that can look off-putting.

Smiling goes a long way, even for phone interviews where the reporter can’t see you. When you smile, your voice will sound more enthusiastic and passionate about the topic. Lastly, always direct your attention to the reporter, not the camera.

  1. Be Ready for Challenging Questions

Even the most prepared interviewees can face tough questions they weren’t expecting. The key is to remain calm and poised. When you’re faced with a challenging or off-topic question, use the power of the pause. Take a moment to gather your thoughts before answering. If you need to redirect, use statements like, “The focus here is really…” or “That’s one way to look at it, let me give you another perspective…” These tactics can help you steer the conversation back to your key messages.

  1. Practice Makes Perfect

The more you practice, the better you’ll perform. Brainstorm potential questions you might be asked and roleplay answers with a colleague or coach. Record yourself on video or speak into a mirror to see how you come across, and adjust as needed. This will also help you become comfortable with the pacing and delivery of your responses.

With these media training tips in mind, you’ll be well-equipped to handle any interview situation with confidence. Remember, it’s not just about delivering your message, it’s about connecting with your audience in a clear, authentic way. Happy interviewing!
