Public relations professionals wear many hats, so it can be challenging to explain what PR is.
Defining PR
Public relations is a strategic communication process that works to improve and manage a company or organization’s reputation by building a relationship with the public through earned media. PR aims to create a positive image of a brand with the community, media and other stakeholders. Public relations professionals focus on earned media rather than paying for media. They execute earned media opportunities by sending out story ideas to the media and writing press releases. In today’s digital age, they also collaborate with influencers.
Connecting with Journalists
Our primary goal as PR professionals is to share story ideas with the media. We do so through several forms of communication: press releases, pitches and bylines.
One of the most common forms of communication with the media is sending a press release. Press releases serve to communicate announcements on behalf of clients. If a company is holding a grand opening event, announcing a new CEO or rolling out a new menu, we can craft a press release with all the details a reporter needs to write their story. This can include dates, quotes, facts, figures and more.
The most frequently used form of communication we use with journalists is sending pitches via email. When journalists pick up a pitch from a client, this means a media opportunity is secured. This can include a live TV segment, radio interview, print article or feature on a news website.
Another way we interact with the media is by supplying them with content such as bylines written by our client. Bylines are effective because they allow our clients to be positioned as thought leaders and are an additional way we can share brand messaging.
Influencer Relations
Today, social media is a quick, effective way to manage a client’s reputation. One way we do so is through influencer collaborations. Whether they are celebrities, food reviewers, travel gurus or lifestyle influencers, these key collaborators are an additional way to reach a targeted audience. For example, if a client is holding a local event, we will reach out to local lifestyle influencers to attend and post it on their social media platforms for their audiences to see. This builds brand awareness and encourages viewers to attend the next event the client hosts.
Each Day is Different
Daily tasks include clipping and sending secured coverage to clients; drafting press releases, pitches, bylines or other writing projects; researching topics and story ideas; responding to client emails; coordinating media opportunities, and more.
Regularly, we also attend TV segments and other interview opportunities, meetings and client events.
We work in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.
